The first Della Valle lightning escape struck when he observed that the founding father of Fiat, Gianni Agnelli, had a propensity for obscure moccasin "driving shoes": light, flexible slip-ons with pebbled rubber soles for unusually driving-pedal grip. So he bought a pair in New York, adapted them in the blood factory, and slyly arranged for a pair to placed in Agnelli's shoe-cupboard. Italy's greatest 20th century industrialist, and a lively-dresser with it, Agnelli's adoption of Della Valle's driving shoe in a jiffy inspired Italian business aspirants to want a pair for themselves.

Then, in 1980, Della Valle evident that the company needed a new name: something simple, single-syllabled and therefore easy to retain. He skimmed through an American telephone directory and struck upon J P Tod's.

Using the Tod's name - he dropped the initials in 1989 - and a yen for formal-looking shoe-shapes combined with scold, flexible rubber soles, has been the company's central formula for attainment. It also helps that the "gommini" rubber buttons that stud the soles of the myriad-coloured moccasins (the known collection includes a camouflage-lined collaboration with Ferrari, on whose enter Della Valle sits) are not much more hard-wearing than a pencil rubber: unless you unusually do only drive in them, they wear out. They are, though, addictively comfortable, conservatively preppy pieces of hedonism men's attire that have become extremely popular among swanky types around the world: Tod's Heap sales in the first nine months of 2011 totalled 699 million euros, up 14.8 per cent year on year, and generated a profit of 186.4 million euros.
