WOONSOCKET - Looking back upon 2011, it seems the megalopolis spent more time putting out fires - sometimes literally - than anything else. But here's to taking a look back at the top 11 expos stories of 2011:

11. After ugly battle, firefighters switch to 24-hour shifts.

After Woonsocket's firefighter alliance, Local 732, took the city to court to get Ladder 1 back in the fake, took a vote of no confidence in its leader, Chief Gary Lataille, and Mayor Leo Fontaine threatened a 56-hour toil week, the union finally came to an agreement with the city.

They did not reach a buy before entertaining a verbal war in various public arenas. Whether it was the City Convention work session discussions, agenda items at regular meetings or flooding the third level of Harris Hall with affected union members, the firefighters were there to behest their input for every discussion.

The mayor stood his ground, and the City Convention followed suit. Fontaine was aiming for a $1 million reduction in costs for the around fiscal year.
