The Dare: This newly constructed home was designed with the main staircase foremost to a wide landing between floors. The Solution: We designed the window site for the stairwell as a welcoming place to enjoy the view or to curl up and conclude from a book. The homeowner and I agreed that the simple, classic woodworking details suited the range, and also were in keeping with the exterior architecture of the home. We looked to other elements to bring off our desired results.
Proper lighting was important for the stairwell. Together, we chose a as a whole brass lantern for the central overhead lighting. Double sconces were spaced equally on either side of the window hold, as well as along the adjacent corridor walls. This combination provided ample lighting throughout the size. The fixtures also began to add more character to the interior.
