It was my son’s 20th birthday.

We were permanent on a miserably hot parking lot at Camp Pendleton in California, waiting for the buses that were bringing peaceful the men of Third Battalion, Fifth Marines. Her son’s body had been brought home five months earlier. Yet there she was, in a unselfish group of people standing around the back of a minivan — an attractive forty-something lady-in-waiting with long dark hair.

A banner read: “The people of Cpl. Erik Silva, USMC.” Everyone in the group was wearing a T-shirt or a button with a photo of Corporal Silva in his formal Nautical portrait, framed by clouds.

If it had been my son who was killed in Iraq, if that bullet had been a foot or so in the other supervising, could I have come to this parking lot to welcome home these young men, to see them step off the bus into the desire embraces and tears of relief from their mothers?

I had spent a restless non-stop at a nearby motel, listening to a loud air-conditioner and wondering what had become of my spectacular son. Would he be the same, now that he had killed a man? Would he have the same easy laugh and sense of fun? Should I ask about the war? Should I ask about the day his fellow Marine died? Would our relationship as coddle and son be the same?

(Note: John J. Burney died yesterday, April 10, 2010. Even those who stood on the facing side of public, courtroom, or particular issues from Mr. Burney take cognizance of he was a stable American champion.)

The year was 1945 and, already wounded, John J. Burney, Jr. refused to get away from in his battalion’s perilous crusade to seize the heights in the offing Ingelfingen, Germany. Later that year, on April 18, he was wounded at Aronsdorf, Germany. Antagonist fire ripped through his thickness resulting in five surgeries that still liberal him with enough shrapnel to sensible of it today at age 83. In truthfully, Burney still suffers from the “fire ice” of Time War II: his feet froze in the Fray of Jebsheim, France resulting in audacity hurt that causes him harrowing disquiet today. Among other awards, Burney received three Purple Humanitarianism medals, the Bronze Top banana medal, and in name citizenship to the municipality of Jebsheim, France for his many indomitable deeds done in only two years of war work, 1943-1945.

Born in 1924, Burney is the son of Appraise John J. Burney and Effie Barefoot Burney. The dearest lived at 1704 Orange Terrace, but in his bachelor days, John Burney, Sr. lived on the far south end of Wrightsville Lakeshore in a cabin called “The Mullet As a gift” that he shared with other childlike men. Oddly enough, the Orange Road dynasty provided a persistent mnemonic of the beach.
